Comprehensive and hassle-free – all the important info about MIA at a glance

MIA is the modern, electronic subscription ticket for buses and trains. MIA gives you 12 months’ worth of travel. Completely mobile and hassle-free, and allowing you to save, e.g. compared to twelve Monthly Tickets:

  • Price category I in Bremen: Save € 133.20 (€ 135,60 in 2018).
  • Price category I in Bremerhaven: Save € 114.00 (€ 116,40 in 2018).
  • Price category I in Oldenburg: Save € 138.00 (€ 139,20 in 2018).
  • Price category H (VBN region): Save € 495.60 (€ 505,20 in 2018).

Simply take it with you, jump onboard and get going. The electronic chip stores your subscription, so you don’t need to worry about monthly milestones or checking in at machines.

MIA comes in 2 versions

MIAplus costs just € 6.50 extra per month compared to MIA, but offers you so much more:

  • An additional adult and up to four children aged 6-14 inclusive may come along Mondays to Fridays from 7 p.m. onwards and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
  • You (and anyone coming with you under the companion option) will ride free throughout the entire VBN network on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
  • You (and anyone coming with you under the companion option) can use the NightLines operating under the VBN fare and the Ammerland NightOwls (NachtEulen) without paying any surcharge.

The MIA/MIAplus Tickets are issued exclusively at the customer service centre (on behalf of the Verkehrsverbund Bremen/Niedersachsen) for the Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG) by BREMERHAVEN BUS and the Verkehr und Wasser GmbH (VWG) in Oldenburg.

Order forms for the MIA/MIAplus Ticket are available online at: en.vbn.de/mia (desktop) and from the three transportation companies BSAG, BREMERHAVEN BUS and VWG.

The tickets can be purchased on the first day of each month if the direct debit mandate has been received by the applicable customer service centre by the 10th day of the previous month. 

Incidentally, the BSAG, the BREMERHAVEN BUS and the VWG can date the MIA/MIAplus Ticket retrospectively for the first of each month and issue the ticket immediately, providing the ticket is purchased via cash payment. The contract is valid for 12 months.

The MIA subscription runs for 12 months. The monthly amount is debited monthly from your account. The subscription is automatically renewed by a further 12 months if not duly cancelled.

You can use the MIA on all VBN transport services within the fare zones/price categories booked by you (city and regional buses, trams and local trains).

Yes, your family members or friends can also travel on the MIA.

The chip only stores your fare option (price category, fare zones and customer number); individual journeys are not stored. The MIA is tamper-proof and does not contain any personal data. The stored data may be viewed under "Display Tickets" at BOB machines.

When using regional buses, NightLines or buses operated by BREMERHAVEN BUS, the VWG Oldenburg as well as the BSAG (from 8 pm), you need to present your MIA ticket to the driver at the front door or have the card scanned by a reader. When using local trains as well as trams and buses operated by the BSAG, the ticket is checked by inspectors, who have readers to scan the chip card.

If the MIA ticket cannot be read due to a damaged chip, the BSAG, BREMERHAVEN BUS or VWG Oldenburg customer centres will issue you with a new ticket. The old one will be destroyed, so as to prevent misuse.

Please block your MIA ticket immediately, and receive a new one for a processing fee of € 10. To do this, please contact your BSAG, BREMERHAVEN BUS or VWG Oldenburg customer centre directly or by telephone, or the VBN 24-hour information service on +49 (0)4 21/59 60 59. The electronic MIA ticket will be blocked and will be no longer valid.

Yes, it is. But the IC/EC-Surcharges subscription must be purchased through Deutsche Bahn. Please note: VBN customers may use the IC trains between Bremen Hbf and Augustfehn, stopping in Delmenhorst, Hude, Oldenburg, Bad Zwischenahn and Westerstede-Ocholt, without paying a surcharge. The request form is available from the DB travel centres. Please note that requests for the IC/EC-Surcharges subscription must be received by Deutsche Bahn one month before the start date.

No, the MIA is not available as a Mobile Ticket.

The area of applicability (tariff zones, pricing levels) can be changed on the first of each month. You must apply at the relevant customer service centre in person by the 20th day of the previous month for the change to become effective from the first of the following month. The change is implemented on the chip card directly. Customers unable to come to the customer service centre will receive a new chip card by post; generally within 5 working days. The new billing amount will be debited effective of the date of change.

If it is not cancelled, the MIA contract will be extended for another 12 months. The cancellation request must be submitted in writing to the applicable company by the 10th day of the previous month. The MIA/MIAplus Ticket must be returned to the issuing transportation company (BSAG, BREMERHAVEN BUS or VWG) immediately after the contract has concluded. The MIA card is no longer a valid ticket after the contract has been concluded.

In the event of a premature contract termination, the difference between the monthly cost of the MIA/MIAplus Tickets and the cost for the respective monthly ticket for each completed month in the current contractual year and up to the cancellation request will be prorated and drafted for the final time, except for ticket price increases and relevant tariff conditions and/or transportation condition changes. If the contract is cancelled as a result of a tariff adjustment, the difference charges will be waived, provided the cancellation request has been received by the applicable transportation company a minimum of 21 days prior to the tariff adjustment.
